A Blog Post from Managing Director Neil Sayer:

All you ever want when running a business is new opportunities. If you’re good at what you do for a living then the delivery should be straightforward. Getting a new opportunity is the hard bit.

I’m currently looking for a tradesmen to do some work at my house. I’ve phoned four people who have come recommended. Only one has ever come round to quote. Two said they will ‘call back later’, ten days ago!

One arrived at my house half an hour before our agreed time (when I wasn’t in), only to leave a flyer on my doorstep. No phone call to say sorry we missed each other and let’s rearrange. No, he just left me a flyer. I already have his details because I CALLED HIM in the first place, so I don’t need your flyer! Just call me to re-arrange, it’s really not that difficult.

I also know that the above mentioned tradesman pays for advertising and also pays for someone to do his social media. He pay’s for this to generate new opportunities. Well, I gave you an opportunity and you have chosen not to take it. You’ve just wasted your advertising and social media budget because you are lazy.

When we get an opportunity we are all over it. We meet, we chat, we show off our services… we get the work.

The biggest opportunity missed here is that if any of the tradesmen bothered to come round then they would see that what I am asking for help with is just the tip of the iceberg. It would lead to literally thousands of pounds worth of work.

Let’s just say, the first guy who came round, on time, listened to what I needed, has now got the job.

In business, small opportunities are often the start of great enterprises. When an opportunity knocks, open the door because most opportunities don’t come around twice.
